In the June 30, 1967, edition of the New York Times, it was reported that Helen Gallagher's name would go up in lights that night on the Sweet Charity marqee, replacing Gwen Verdon, who was recovering from surgery. Since this was a Thursday and the announcement included the information that Verdon was recovering from surgery, it is likely that Gallagher had already been playing Charity for at least a few days.
