There have been various stories about the circumstances that led to Margalit Ankory being replaced by Lorraine Serabian. In the earliest telling we can find, it was after the dress rehearsal before opening night in New Haven. Serabian went on for Ankory at the dress rehearsal, and it was decided to give her the role. As Serabian would tell the story in later years, Ankory missed the first act of a performance in Boston to attend a friend's wedding, and she did not inform anyone of this in advance. It may be that Ankory did this at the dress rehearsal rather than a public performance. According to an article published on Dec. 22, 1968 (five weeks after the Broadway opening) in the New York Times, Serabian said that the actress originally hired lost the role before the final runthrough in New Haven. That runthrough was the first time Serabian had performed any of the role. At the end of the runthrough, Serabian said, she was told that the part was hers.
Margalit Ankory must have also been good as she later played the role in the bus-and-truck tour.
