Michael Crawford and Robert Lindsay (Me and My Girl) both turned down the role of Max.
Several days before the first preview, Richard Dreyfuss was replaced after a television interview in which he mentioned problems he was having in rehearsals and jokingly urged audiences to stay away. No official reason was given for his departure, but Nathan Lane was announced shortly after this interview.
Nathan Lane opened the show and left soon after to begin filming the movie version.
