This production employed four musicians: one each on piano (doubling as musical director); synthesizer; drums and percussion; and double bass. This was expanded for the cast recording.
According to an article in the New York Times, the production had announced that it would open at the Minetta Lane Theatre, a 399-seat house, rather than the York's 199-seat theatre at St. Peter's Church. This would have allowed the owners of the Minetta Lane — Mitchell Maxwell and Alan Schuster — to take over as commercial producers of the production after four weeks. But they were not able to reach terms with Stephen Sondheim (according to John Breglio, Sondheim's lawyer at the time).
The production had been budgeted for the larger theatre. As a result, it lost money every week of the run, even though it was selling out.
The performance total for the run is sometimes given as 54, but that includes previews. The production played 14 previews and 40 performances from opening night to closing.
The production played seven performances a week: Tuesday through Saturday evenings, and matinees on Saturday and Sunday.
