Early-previews song list (10/8/1981)
In the Merrily We Roll Along chapter of his book Finishing the Hat, Stephen Sondheim writes that "Darling!" was cut before rehearsals, that "Honey" was cut before previews began, and that "Thank You for Coming" was cut when it was decided that "something more substantial" was needed for that spot and so "Bobby and Jackie and Jack" replaced it. This is all incorrect. All four songs were in the production when previews started. All four were listed in the playbills for early previews, but that is not definitive as songs are often listed in playbills during previews when they've already been cut (and sometimes provisional titles are listed for songs that never get written). Live recordings of early previews confirm that all four were in the show when previews started. While "Darling!" and "Thank You for Coming" were cut after the first four previews, "Honey" remained in the production for approximately three weeks.
"The Blob" was cut very late in previews. It was performed for more than a month during previews.
