The day before the Broadway production closed, Universal Pictures bought the screen rights for $200,000 plus 25% of the film's profits. The movie was to be a Technicolor film produced by Sam Spiegel and starring Deanna Durbin. Shooting was announced to begin in January 1948. The budget, however, was too high. That along with tax problems holding up films being exported to England, Spiegel postponed the film indefinitely.
Up until this film, Florence Henderson had only worked in television and on stage.
In addition to writing the new songs indicated for the film, Robert Wright and George Forrest also re-wrote many of the lyrics for the songs from the Broadway version which were also used in the film version.
