Boyd Gaines, cast as Robert in this production, had serious vocal problems during the run, which he later said had been caused by acid reflux. According to the article "2 Roberts try to sort out Bobby's needs," publshed in the Winter 1996 issue of The Sondheim Review, the understudy for the role, James Clow, performed it 65 times during the run (including previews).
