Five weeks after the opening, Phyllis Newman became the alternate for Barbara Harris. Newman played Wednesday and Saturday matinees. By this point, Harris had missed several performances, with her understudy, Carmen Alvarez, going on for her. Later in the run, Alvarez became the alternate.

The tryout had been scheduled to open on Tuesday, September 6, 1966, after a single preview the night before. Because of "technical difficulty with complicated scenery" (or so Variety reported), the preview on September 5 was canceled, and the opening delayed to the Saturday evening performance on September 10. Previews started on the date that was originally scheduled as the opening.

By the New York opening, the scenery in the first act had been reconceived and greatly simplified.
