The copyright record for the song names "Jean Murray", a pseudonym for New York City disk jockey Murray Kaufman and his mother Jean. Some accounts of the song's creation credit the first line and music to Jean Kaufman, the lyric to Darin and Murray Kaufman.

The song was first recorded in April 1958 by Darin, with arrangements by Ray Ellis, produced by Ahmet Ertegun. It was released as a May 1958 single from Acto Records (78 & 45rpm, catalog number 6117). The recording was later included on Darin's eponymous debut album Bobby Darin, released September 1958.
