Based on Aida by Giuseppe Verdi, libretto by Antonio Ghislanzoni.

Synopsis

The action takes place on and about General Farrow's plantation near Memphis during the first year of the Civil War.

Aida, a plantation slave, loves young Captain Raymond Demarest (Radamès in the opera), who is unhappily pledged to Jessica (Amneris in the opera), the General's daughter. Aida's stepfather, Adam Brown, comes back from the North via the underground to lead a slave uprising. Demarest becomes involved in the plot.

The plot is discovered. Brown is shot dead, Aida is wounded, and Demarest is fatally whipped by masked and hooded Knights of the White Cross. The lovers die together in a rickety Negro church, while outside Jessica prays for the repose of Demarest's soul.
