Synopsis

John P. Wintergreen rides a “love” platform to the presidency. Party bosses stage a publicity romance with beauty queen Diana Devereaux, but Wintergreen instead marries his sensible campaign worker, Mary Turner. Diana sues, Congress fumes, and the inept Vice President Alexander Throttlebottom stumbles into prominence as hearings, impeachment threats, and international squabbles mount. In the end, loyalty and common sense outmaneuver political grandstanding, restoring order—and the couple’s future—amid satiric jabs at American democracy.

Trivia & History

Won the Pulitzer Prize for Drama in 1932, the only musical at the time to have done so. George Gershwin was not included in the citation as his contribution was deemed musical and not dramatic.
