Synopsis

In Civil War–era Georgia, a determined Southern belle watches her privileged world unravel as war approaches. Her life shifts radically: from society balls to chaos, she confronts loss, hunger, and the decline of her family’s plantation. Ambition and survival shape her choices—she manipulates suitors, makes strategic marriages, and navigates Reconstruction’s harsh economy. At every turn, she clings to the land she loves, adapting to changing roles—from wife to widow to businesswoman. Her relationships reflect shifting power: with one man, she shares fiery passion and tumult; with another, she attempts security and societal acceptance. Through tragedy, fire, and the end of an era, she remains fiercely determined to rebuild on her own terms, holding fast to her resilience amid upheaval.

Trivia & History

The songs "Goodbye My Honey", "Johnny is My Darling", "Where is My Soldier Boy?", and "Why Did They Die?" are listed as actually performed. They do not appear in the proper order in any program. All of them, with "Bonnie Blue Flag", are sung at once as "Atlanta Burning".

The score is based on folk songs of the South.
