Trivia & History

The first LP issue was released in 1972, in a gatefold jacket. On the front, back and inside of the jacket were costume and set design sketches for Ben Bagley's proposed production featuring unpublished songs by Cole Porter to be titled The Painted Smiles of Cole Porter. Bagley produced the recording (as well as many other recordings).

On the cover, under the title of the LP, Unpublished Cole Porter, it said:

Soon to be produced as a major Broadway musical
BEN BAGLEY'S
”PAINTED SMILES OF COLE PORTER”

In 1977, the LP was reissued with seven additional tracks. Six of those seem likely to have been recorded at the same as the 15 tracks issued in 1972. Those six tracks were:

  • Dainty Quainty Me
  • At Last In Your Arms
  • Sweet Nudity
  • Bertie and Gertie
  • Fish
  • Pills

The seventh track added in 1977, ”When I Was a Little Cuckoo,” performed by Kaye Ballard, was taken from a live recording of Decline and Fall of the Entire World as Seen Through the Eyes of Cole Porter. Bagley wrote in the notes for this reissue that the track had been deleted from the cast recording of Decline and Fall, but that seems unlikely as the cast recording was recorded in a studio, not live.

On the 1972 issue, Bud McCreery was credited with ”special vocal arrangements,” and Judd Woldin was credited with ”musical direction and arrangements.” On the 1977 LP issue with the seven, McCreery was not credited at all, and Woldin was credited only with musical arrangements.

In 1991, there was a CD issue of the 1977 reissue. The credits appeared as they had on the 1977 issue.
