The Threepenny Opera

London Production (1956)

Back to Overview

Trivia & History

The production moved the time period from the early 19th century to "the threshold of the 20th Century."

We have followed the playbill's list of musical numbers in listing Macheath as Mack except for the "3rd Threepenny Finale," where he was listed as Macheath.

Many sources give the total number of performances as 140. The source for our total of 167 is J. P. Wearing's The London Stage 1950-1959: A Calendar of Productions, Performers, and Personnel. The book (one of several by Wearing in a series covering different decades) seems generally reliable. In addition, Wearing's performance total seems more plausible than 140 given the production's opening and closing dates.
