There were drastic changes made to the score and script for this film in an effort to give audiences what they'd expect from the film's stars. To showcase Jeanette MacDonald's operatic voice, arias were added to the score. To give Nelson Eddy the romantic angle that he usually had, the original Otto Harbach/Oscar Hammerstein II book was rendered unrecognizable so that Eddy could both win the girl and wear the Mounties uniforms.
