In the fall of 1987, the production was told it would have to move from the Palace Theatre because plans had been made for a hotel to be built above and around the theatre, and the theatre would have to shut down during construction. Plans were made for the production to move to the Mark Hellinger Theatre, but with business going downhill it was ultimately decided that the move would be too expensive. There was to have been a new pair of leads when the show re-opened at the Hellinger — Lee Roy Reams as Albin, Mace Barrett as Georges — but the production closed before they had a chance to take over.
