John McClure produced many classical recordings for Columbia records, having started there as an engineer. He was Leonard Bernstein's preferred producer, and he also produced recordings conducted by Bruno Walter, Igor Stravinsky, Aaron Copland and for soloists including Rudolf Serkin and Isaac Stern.
As far as we can tell, his background as a recording engineer and his association with Bernstein, with whom he made approximately 200 recordings over three decades, led him to be asked to be the sound designer for Bernstein's 1600 Pennsylvania Avenue, and this led him to more work as a sound designer for musicals during a period, although he was still working as a freelance producer of classical recordings and also worked for PBS on many televised concerts.
