Set in late-nineteenth century Germany, the story follows Melchior Gabor, Moritz Stiefel, Wendla Bergmann and their peers as they struggle to understand the meaning of sexuality and violence in a oppressive, repressed society.

Warner Brothers has expressed interest in making a movie version. McG's production company purchased the film rights. He is rumored to be attached to direct. In March 2010, lyricist-librettist Steven Sater revealed that a film version was being planned and could begin production in Europe in fall 2010. He and composer Duncan Sheik wrote a new song.
