Originally intended to be a presentation of Shakespeare's play by the Public Theatre with some incidental songs and music added. The work occurred while Joseph Papp, founder of the Public, was on vacation. When he attended a rehearsal upon his return, the show had become a full-fledged musical with a politicized adaptation targeting Vietnam and other issues of the day. Papp was upset but the audience reception was extremely positive, prompting a transfer to Broadway and many awards.
