On the eve of a Newport society wedding, headstrong heiress Tracy Lord plans to marry industrialist George Kittredge when her debonair ex-husband, C.K. Dexter Haven, returns. A tabloid scheme plants reporter Mike Connor and photographer Liz Imbrie in the household, where cocktails, jealousies, and revelations churn. As parties and missteps escalate, Tracy tests her notions of class, perfection, and desire, choosing between safe respectability, fleeting infatuation, and the love that understands her best.
