In London's Jewish East End during the Bltizkrieg, The Jewish Blitztein family's mother owns a pickled herring stall that adjoins the cockney Locke family's father's fruit stall. The two are at odds. But Mrs. Bltiztein's daughter, Carol, falls in love with Mr. Locke's son, Georgie. Carol is blinded during an air raid. Mrs. Blitztein's son, Harry, deserts the army. And Mrs. Blitztein is nearly killed in an air raid.
There were rumors of a Broadway production starring Ethel Merman, Martha Raye or Molly Picon as Mrs. Blitzstein. The expensive production and British roots were obstacles that could not be overcome.
