The production was originally to have opened on Thursday, March 5, 1964, after having started previews on February 28. The opening was first delayed to March 11, and then again to March 15. There was no performance on March 11. With the opening for that night canceled, it is likely that a rehearsal was held instead.
During previews, the production played a schedule of six performances a week. It was supposed to switch to a standard eight-performance-a-week schedule after it opened.
