Trivia & History

This concert was performed twice (at 7 p.m. and 9:30 p.m.) on March 3, 1983, in the auction room at Sotheby Park Bernet as part of the Whitney Museum of American Art's Composers' Showcase series. At the time, there was probably no thought that it would later be licensed for production as a revue. The concert was titled A Stephen Sondheim Evening.

Our song list above is taken from the concert's printed program, but we have altered a couple of things in it.

  • The opening "All Things Bright and Beautiful" was listed as being performed by the Ensemble, but it was an instrumental performed by the band. It was not included on the recording that was issued of the concert and seems not to be included in the licensed version.
  • No performer was listed for "Send in the Clowns." Angela Lansbury was the surprise guest who performed it, accompanied by Sondheim himself.

The section of "It's That Kind of a Neighborhood" from Saturday Night that was performed in the show was not listed in the program. "Isn't It? was listed as "This Is Nice, Isn't It?"
