The Roar of the Greasepaint —— The Smell of the Crowd

Closed prior to London (1964)

Trivia & History

This show was expected to open in London in September 1964. The Shaftesbury Theatre was booked, with an opening tentatively set for September 18, but this was not announced before the tryout started.

Reviews for the tryout were mixed to negative. An additional tryout engagement in Manchester was scheduled, and the London opening was delayed. In the end, the production closed without reaching London. The show did not play in London until a production in 1988, 24 years later.

In between the runs in Nottingham and Manchester, the production played at the Royal Court in Liverpool, and the Theatre Royal in Newcastle, but we don't have exact dates for those runs. The Nottingham run was supposed to open on August 3, 1964, but the opening was delayed twice. The opening ended up being a week later, on August 10.

The Manchester run was not originally scheduled but was added at some point after the opening in Nottingham.
