Trivia & History

The opening-night cast lists in certain print and online sources contain incorrect information about several roles, listing Richard Woods as Maitre Du Fresne, Andy Bew as An Artist, John Dorrin as Maitre Duclos, Patrica Arnell as the standby for Gigi, and Larry Keith as the standby for Honore. All primary sources that we've found, including a pre-Broadway playbill, a Broadway opening-night playbill and a few early post-opening playbills list George Gaynes as Maitre Du Fresne, Patrick Spohn as An Artist, Howard Chitjian as Maitre Duclos, Hallie Scott as the standby for Gigi, and George Gaynes as the understudy for Honore.

Playbills from later in the run reveal that during the run Richard Woods replaced George Gaynes, Andy Bew replaced Patrick Spohn as An Artist, John Dorrin replaced Howard Chitjian as Maitre Duclos, Patricia Arnell replaced Hallie Scott as the standby, and Larry Keith was hired to be a standby for Honore when George Gaynes left the cast.

Similar errors are made in some of these sources regarding several ensemble members — replacements are listed as having been in the opening-night cast, while members of the opening-night cast are listed as replacements.

The opening-night review in the New York Times confirms Gaynes, Bew and Chitjian as having played, respectively, Du Fresne, An Artist and Duclos in the opening-night cast. The Times review does not list the standbys and understudies, nor the ensemble
