Notes

Sang at the Metropolitan Opera more than 160 times between 1948, when he made his debut in the title role of Peter Grimes, and 1961, when he gave his final performance there as Admète in Gluck's Alceste. His roles at the Met included Tamino in The Magic Flute, Lohengrin, Grigory in Boris Godunov, Parsifal, Pinkerton in Madama Butterfly, Matteo in Arabella, Rodolfo in La Bohème, and both Eisenstein and Alfred in Die Fledermaus.
